NEWS: Christopher Allen Named John L. Magro Resident Conductor

Cincinnati Opera

Cincinnati Opera is pleased to announce the appointment of Christopher Allen to the newly-created position of the John L. Magro Resident Conductor for Cincinnati Opera. This position carries with it the opportunity to conduct one production each year in the summers of 2015, 2016, and 2017. In those years, Mr. Allen will also conduct Opera in the Park, the annual free concert in Washington Park that inaugurates the Opera’s summer season. For the 2015 season, Mr. Allen will conduct the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon and William M. Hoffman’s Morning Star. The 2016 and 2017 titles will be announced at a future date.

“I have long wanted to create a mentoring opportunity at Cincinnati Opera for a promising opera conductor,” said Evans Mirageas, The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director of Cincinnati Opera. “With the assistance of the John L. Magro Artist's Development Fund, we now have the opportunity to formalize this idea. The late Mr. Magro’s Fund has long supported the appearance of one conductor each season at Cincinnati Opera. I am delighted that we are able to add this aspect of mentoring to our long established tradition going back more than fifty years of nurturing young singing talents with repeated engagements. You only need to recall that in the summers of 1966, 1967, and 1968, we hired a young tenor from Spain just starting his career at New York City Opera—Plácido Domingo.”

A graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, Mr. Allen currently serves as the Associate Conductor of LA Opera, where for the past three seasons he has worked closely with Music Director James Conlon and Artistic Director Plácido Domingo. In 2015, he was named as a finalist for the London-based International Opera Awards in the “newcomer” category and will make his UK conducting debut in September, leading The Barber of Seville for English National Opera. Mr. Allen first worked with Cincinnati Opera as a rehearsal pianist and assistant conductor for the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Summer Festivals.
